All the books hightlighted in RED are books I have studied parts of in school or college, but I certainly can't claim to have read them completely. I was a little surprised I haven't completely read any of them, but again, it shows how many wonderfully influential books there are in the world that I may never read.

The Newberry Medal & Honor Books

I had so much fun with the 100 Books lists that I decided to do another one-- I have found some of my favorite books by trying to read my way through the Newberry Medal and Honor books. As my reading goals have changed I haven't read as many of these in the last few years, but I've also come to realize there are millions more books than I will ever be able to read. Which is soooo sad. I copied this list from the ALA's website.

Several things came to mind as I was reading through the list. First, all the wonderful books that I LOVE!!! Books I can, and do, read over and over- The Witch of Blackbird Pond is a perfect example. I've loved this book since I first read it in middle school. Second, I'm amazed at the number of books that are still popular today, like A Wrinkle in Time or Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH. Third, there are so many books on the list! I'd better get started if I want to read them all!! There is a wonderful blog called The Newberry Project that is about reading all the Newberry winners.

And lastly, while I haven't liked ALL of the books I've read, the Newberry's do provide a wide range of socially and culturally diverse books, many of which have given me a glimpse into other worlds, real and make-believe.

I counted a total of 381 books on the list, but will freely admit I could have miscounted, so the grand total may really be give or take five or so.
